FAQ’s

Why is there a new TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment?

The TAE 2021 Case for Change prepared by PwC’s Skills for Australia submitted that the TAE40116 wasn’t fit for purpose. They put forth the following five key points:

  • TAE units of competency deliver outdated skills and knowledge.
  • Packaging rules of TAE qualifications do not provide adequate flexibility for learners
  • The TAE Training Package lacks ‘stackable’ skill sets.
  • The TAE Training Package does not support nor clearly articulate the range and diversity of career pathways through the VET industry.
  • The TAE Training Package does not appropriately recognise the experience of learners with prior teaching practice in other education sectors.

Will I have to ‘upgrade’ my TAE40116 qualification to the TAE40122?

No, there is no requirement to upgrade to the TAE40122. This is the key difference compared to the last change.

Under the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015, the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment will remain the minimum requirement, along with its successor (the TAE40122 version). This means that either the TAE40116 or the TAE40122 are valid trainer and assessor qualifications.

Do I need to upgrade if I hold the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment plus TAELLN411 and TAEASS502?

No, as the Standards for RTOs are currently written, there is no requirement to complete additional training to continue to meet the requirements outlined in the Standards.

What is the difference between the TAE40116 and the TAE40122?

The TAE40116 qualification was comprised of 10 units, with 9 core units and 1 elective unit. In comparison, the new TAE40122 qualification is made up of 12 units, consisting of 6 core units and 6 electives. This allows for unprecedented choice and the ability to specialise in different focus areas.

Following is an outline of the key changes made to the qualification:

  • The addition of a new core unit, TAEPDD401 Work effectively in the VET sector aimed at supporting learners in navigating the VET environment and improving their professional practice.
  • The units TAEDEL401 Plan, organise and deliver group-based learning and TAEDEL402 Plan, organise and facilitate learning in the workplace have been largely collapsed to create the new core unit TAEDEL411 Facilitate vocational training.
  • TAEDES401 Design and develop learning programs has been replaced with the new core unit TAEDES412 Design and develop plans for vocational training.
  • TAEDES402 Use training packages and accredited courses to meet client needs has been replaced with the new core unit TAEDES411 Use nationally recognised training products to meet vocational training needs.
  • TAEASS512 Design and develop assessment tools (the successor to TAEASS502) has been moved from a core unit to an elective unit within TAE40122.
  • The TAELLN411 Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills has been deconstructed, with content embedded into ASS, DEL and DES units.

What is the mapping between the TAE40116 and TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment?

Looking at the equivalence between the two qualifications at the unit level paints a very different picture.

There are no equivalent core units and only a couple of opportunities for credit transfer of superseded units into the new course.

The transition from TAE40110 (2010 version) to the TAE40116 (2016 version) had many units deemed equivalent. This meant it was common for someone to be able to gain credit transfer for 80-90% of the new qualification. This will not be the case with the new TAE40122.
